In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (the German word for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners.

Hoofdpersonages

Lale Sokolov komt in 1942 aan in het concentratiekamp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Hij krijgt daar al gauw de taak om de binnenkomende gevangenen te tatoeëren en van een nummer te voorzien. Terwijl hij praktisch voor de Nazi’s werkt, smokkelt hij eten en medicijnen naar wie hij maar kan.
Lale valt als een blok voor Gita als hij haar arm tatoeëert. Vanaf dat moment wil hij er zeker van zijn dat niet alleen hijzelf, maar ook Gita de oorlog overleeft.

Sfeer

Morris weet een onheilspellende sfeer op te roepen. Je weet nooit precies wat er gaat gebeuren. Net zoals Lale, die het ook niet weet. Natuurlijk weet je als lezer wel wat er voor dingen gebeurden in Auschwitz, maar Lale wist dat niet precies. Je vreest op meerdere momenten voor zijn leven.

Schrijfstijl

Dit boek is de debuutroman van Heather Morris. Het is zeker niet slecht geschreven, maar het had gewoon iets dieper gekund. Morris beschrijft de gebeurtenissen heel feitelijk en soms miste ik daarbij het gevoel. Ik voelde meer bij het nawoord van de zoon van Lale en Gita dan in het boek zelf.

‘‘Don’t compare me to him. Tell her I think she’s a hero and I’m proud to say I know her.’
‘What do you mean, hero? She’s not a hero,’ Gita says, with some annoyance. ‘She just wants to live.’
‘And that makes her a hero. You’re a hero, too, my darling. That the two of you have chosen to survive is a type of resistance to these Nazi bastards. Choosing to live is an act of defiance, a form of heroism.’
‘In that case, what does it make you?’
‘I have been given the choice of participating in the destruction of our people, and I have chosen to do so in order to survive. I can only hope I am not one day judged as a perpetrator or a collaborator.’
Gita leans over and kisses him. ‘You are a hero to me.’’
